I have really been enjoying making Bento lunches for CJ. It’s so fun to think up new things to give him every day. I have even been compiling a list of lunch ideas I hope to post soon. Thanks to all of the fellow “bento-ers” (is that a word?) who stopped by and left comments on my Kindergarten Bento Lunch post. I’ve been checking out your blogs and what I’ve seen is amazing! I really enjoy seeing what all of you creative moms come up with.
CJ continues to like the Bento lunches. On Bento #2 he had 2 mini cinnamon-raisin bagels with cream cheese and jelly, strawberries, star cucumber cut-outs, a side of ranch dressing, a Babybel cheese and a Spree candy. This was too much food. CJ was only able to eat about half.
I have yet to purchase a real Bento box. I keep hoping to find a local store that has supplies. So far I’ve been to Sanrio and my local Asian market without any luck – although I did have fun at the Asian market. I mostly bought snacks and treats for CJ because I couldn’t read a lot of the packages! I still ended up with one item that I thought was gum, but is really candy, and another item that I thought was a box of cookies but is really a box of crackers. CJ is not complaining, he says it’s all yummy.
Bento #3 had turkey and cheddar cheese roll-ups, cantaloupe with grapes, goldfish pretzels, and a small chocolate airplane. I tried to decrease the amount of food in this lunch so I filled in space with a striped napkin under the airplane. I think I need a slightly smaller Bento box. CJ really loved the roll-ups!
Bento #4 had chicken nuggets and cheese skewers, strawberries, water crackers, and a chocolate airplane. CJ says this lunch was “great!”

Where do you live?
I’ve had great luck buying bento boxes on eBay. A lot of the sellers are in Japan…they seem to have the greatest selection and cutest boxes. Within a week of ordering I had an array of Hello Kitty, Disney, and Sesame Street boxes in hand.
Ms.____2 be!
I live in the Eastern part of the USA. I found a search feature from lunchinabox.net for stores with Bento supplies. They recommended a Japanese grocery store near me. I went there today and it was very small, and no Bento stuff. I’ll think I’ll order online

Thanks for the eBay suggestion. I think I’ll do that. I found some nice things there too. Hopefully I’ll find some bento boxes for boys.
Thank you both for stopping by
OK guys, I know what you’re thinking – does she make those little Bento lunches for hubby too? Sadly, no, but there are many good reasons for this.
The first one is because I eat a lot, being a runner, and I don’t think they make Bento boxes or cute little containers big enough for a lunch for me. It would probably have to be the size of a small toolbox. Actually that’s not a bad idea. A couple of hot dogs, pizza, bananas, apples, cheeze, cookies, chocolate – that should get me through most of the day, maybe until about 3 o’clock.
The second reason is because there are some things I like to eat that she would not touch with a 10 foot pole. Such as nearly any kind of fish. Smoked salmon is great. I also love herrings. You have to try them. They smell and look a little gross at first, but get past that and you will love it. They kind of say the same thing about limburger cheeze. It’s true. I’ve noticed that I usually feel really good after eating that. I think it has a lot of healing properties and nutrition that lots of typical American foods lack.
Finally, she frankly does lots of great things for our family already, as you can see, and she needs some “mommy time” as much as anyone.

Ha,ha. I’ll get right to work on getting you that tool box bento. Do you want me to empty out the big one in the garage?
About the little fishies – if you want to eat gross food that’s your prerogative. I dont want to eat anything that “smells a little gross at first.” My food has to smell good!
