I am embarassed to admit this, but last year in preschool CJ took the same lunch almost every single day. He only stayed for lunch twice a week, but he almost always took a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, applesauce and a cheese stick. I’m not entirely to blame. I did try to give him a turkey and cheese sandwich, or whatever else I could think up, but he always wanted his old favorite. So when I found out that CJ would have to take a peanut-free lunch every day to Kindergarten, I knew our lunch routine had to change.
I learned about Japanese Bento lunches when I discovered the What’s For Lunch At Our House blog. The blog’s author, Shannon, photographs her kids Bento lunches every day and posts them on her blog. How cool is that? So taking a cue from the lunches she made and a few other sites I visited, I made my way over to Target and Michael’s and picked up the following items:
I bought the SnapWare Snap ‘N Stack craft box at Target and the Wilton silicone baking cups, Fun Pix, and mini cookie cutters at Michael’s. I didn’t plan on using a craft box for CJ’s Bento lunch, I was just looking for a box with dividers. This craft box has two levels; one with no dividers and another one divided down the middle. You can snap both layers together or use them individually. I also plan on ordering CJ a Japanese Bento box and some other cute stuff from JBox.
FYI: I contacted SnapWare and they said all of their Snap N Stack boxes and lids are safe for food.
CJ took his first Bento lunch in the divided part of the box and left the bottom part at home. He had turkey pepperoni, cheddar cheese animal cut-outs, whole wheat crackers, red grapes, carrots with sunflower nut butter, and Trader Joe’s cat cookies. He loved it so much, he even asked me to make him another one on Saturday.

Yea bento is fun and a way to be creative.
I agree – it is fun. And I like making something special for my boy. Just wait until you see some of the other fun stuff I I’m going to make
Me too. I always need to pack the food my kids would want to eat. And my bento food for the kids usually revolve around the same food too.
Such a great idea. I love it! You are so creative!
Thanks Tricia! I’m glad you stopped by. What are you making for lunch lately?
How Stinkin’ cool!!!! What a fabulous way to spice up what could be a mundane meal into a eye-catching, mouth- watering, I want what he’s having lunch.
Tari, you’re too kind! Glad you liked it. Stay tuned for future Bento lunches
I’m kinda addicted now!
Hey there! Great site, good work. And very funny about dropping CJ off at camp on the wrong day…lol
No cant say I have ever done that!
I do think you should put a picture of your wonderful brother on this site. I bet he’s sexy in uniform. lol

I LOVE to bento too, but i’ve NEVER thought of a craft organizer. Good Job!
Thanks Laura! I’ve enjoyed seeing your bento lunches too.
Looking forward to the fun stuff you will be preparing. Happy bento-ing!
[...] of the fellow “bento-ers” (is that a word?) who stopped by and left comments on my Kindergarten Bento Lunch post. I’ve been checking out your blogs and what I’ve seen is amazing! I really enjoy [...]
I know this is a year later but how does this system work for you now? Still good? Do you put it all in an insulated tote then to keep things cool? Thanks for any info. I need to get planned for next week, and if I could go this route instead of having to order a bento online and pay for shipping that would be awesome!
Hi Eatfruit,
I meant to order a “real” bento box, but I never got around to getting one. I love the craft box. I use the top and bottom too, but not together. If I have bigger items, like a cutout sandwich, I used the undivided box. I would try making bento lunches with a box you already have and see how it works for you and your child. You can always buy a bento box later. Good luck! Let me know how it works for you.
This system is working great for me. Making lunches is actually easier for me now. Yes, I put it in an insulated tote to keep things cool. I’ll post a new lunch and photos this week – we’re getting back in the swing of things too
